Based on his experiences working as a trained lighting technician and cinematographer in the film industry, Calgary-based photographer Colin Smith has developed a visual arts practice investigating the most simple lens-based technologies.

This exhibition will present a series of high definition, large format images of found and constructed camera obscuras in archetypal hotel room ‘sets’. This body of work relates to his previous photographs documenting abandoned and decaying structures, such as prairie farmhouses and lookout shelters.  When basic projection techniques are combined with light, inverted and unconcealed - even banal settings become magical.

A second work in the exhibition functions as a hybrid zoetrope and camera obscura sculpture that projects dual projected and moving images. Colin Smith: Obscure Inversions explores the power and allure of analogue image production.
