Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise and Visitor Experience, Visitor Experience Associates act as the “face of the AGA” and create a warm and welcoming environment for our guests and members. Visitor Experience Associates work in a variety of areas of the gallery, including shopAGA, Guest Services, Coat Room, Art Sales and Rental and the Community Gallery.

Responsibilities

  • Operate shopAGA retail outlet – including processing transactions, inventory control and display updates;
  • Manage daily operations at the Membership & Guest Services desk – including welcoming visitors to the gallery, answering questions in-person, by phone and email, processing admissions and memberships;
  • Operate the coat check room during applicable exhibitions and special events;
  • Assist with a variety of tasks in the Art Sales and Rental and Community Galleries. This includes but is not limited to art handling, storage, deliveries, installation, database and inventory management;
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school diploma and preferably has or is enrolled in post-secondary education;
  • Previous customer service experience, dealing with front-line customer interaction;
    Comfortable interacting with visitors and clients;
  • Basic physical fitness, this positions may require that one stand for a period of up to four hours;
  • Individuals with interest/experience in art related positions will be considered an asset;
    Prior experience with an arts organization would be considered an asset;
  • The ability to work under general direction and in a team environment.
     

This is a casual part-time position with hours based on business needs (no minimum hours guaranteed). Work hours fluctuate weekly, from Wednesday through Sunday; weekends and holidays are required.

The AGA is seeking a full time Preparator. Reporting to the Lead Preparator and working within the Preparator team, the Preparator will provide technical assistance for the planning, production, presentation, preparation and maintenance of all Gallery exhibitions; as well as for the care and maintenance of the Gallery’s permanent collection and work spaces.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Handling and preparation of works of art to professional museums standards
  • Constructing crates and gallery display fixtures
  • Maintenance of the Gallery preparation area, woodshop and other shared equipment and resources to ensure that all preparation areas are kept clean and in good working order.
  • Preparing exhibition spaces including wall building, painting, lighting, etc
  • Installing of vinyl signage
  • Providing audiovisual support
  • Providing assistance to exhibiting artists and visiting curators
  • Delivering, picking up and moving materials and/or works of art
  • Assisting in the supervision and training of the part-time Assistant Preparators
  • Participation in exhibition and installation planning to determine appropriate methods, scheduling, staffing, equipment and materials required

Qualifications

  • A university or college degree in related field is preferred
  • Experience working in a public art gallery, museum or related field
  • Experience handling and installing various works of art
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills with attention to detail
  • Strong carpentry skills & experience with tool maintence
  • Experience matting and framing would be beneficial
  • Training with Forklift, Aerial Work Platform, and/or Fall Arrest certification is preferred
  • Ability to work under general direction and within a team environment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform physical work associated with preparation of exhibits
  • Capacity to adapt behavior and work methods, as needed, in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles

This is a full-time position commencing October 21, 2024. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Summary

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative individual to join its Exhibitions and Collections team as TD Curator of Indigenous Creativity. This new full-time, 2-year position is supported by TD's Ready Commitment funding initiative. This funding will support the creativity and growth of the successful candidate's curatorial practice, amplifying the voices of Indigenous artists and celebrating the creativity of Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will initiate and collaborate on new exhibition development, collections acquisitions and animation, public programming, and community engagement in partnership with artists, colleagues and organizations across Canada, to support, share and preserve Indigenous creativity.

Reporting to the Executive Director/Chief Curator, the TD Curator of Indigenous Creativity will be responsible for developing exhibition projects and programs that highlight the work of Indigenous artists and creators with AGA audiences. Projects developed by the Curator will focus on sharing and uplifting Indigenous creativity and the work of contemporary Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists, for promotion locally and nationally.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Visual Arts, or a related discipline/special focus on Indigenous arts, culture and creativity, and/or direct knowledge of Indigenous arts and culture through lived experience
  • 5 years work experience in a public art gallery, museum, or related environment, and/or experience curating in the area of Indigenous art and/or culture, including in researching, curating and implementing exhibitions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with artists, cultural groups, and organizations, with an interest in building and fostering relationships. and working with diverse stakeholders and communities
  • Experience in writing interpretive texts and exhibition publications
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral presentations. 
  • A self-motivational workstyle, with time management skills and the ability to work independently to set priorities and goals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word and Excel
