Smoke can be a threat, a sign of danger or impending doom, or a happy signal that you can follow as it rises up on a summer evening to find friends and family gathered together. Smoke is sticky; it lingers in hair and on clothes and can hold memories, both good and bad or a mix of both. For Halie Finney smoke has become a metaphor for grieving and the celebration of someone’s life. This hybrid of smoke and spirit conjures childhood memories and represents the space that a body leaves behind.
