RFM McInnis' twin interests in art and photography have always been intertwined, both as hobbies and as career moves. McInnis' art interests have generally leaned towards the figurative and landscape painting, whereas his photography has been towards historical interests, railways and prairie grain elevators. RFM McInnis' real art career began in Toronto in 1973. Perceiving Toronto to be the centre of Canadian art, McInnis seized the opportunity to jump, sink or swim, into the art world he had always dreamed of, and has never looked back. Poverty-level living and frugality were the result of finding a way with his art alone. McInnis began to stress the figure in his painting as a major theme. Along the way, he met many people who believed in his work. They supported him by buying these early figurative pieces. He considers Toronto his baptism by fire. Many of those Toronto experiences later paid off by positioning him as a serious Canadian painter.
